Do you suffer from TMJ pain? Is the pain sometimes so intense, that it is impossible to find a comfortable sleeping position.
(TMJ) reacts from the joint where the mandible (the lower jaw) joins the temporal bone of the skull, immediately in front of the ear on each side of your head. A small disc of cartilage separates the bones, much like in the knee joint, so that the mandible may slide easily; each time you chew you move it. But you also move it every time you talk and each time you swallow (every three minutes or so). It is, therefore, one of the most frequently used of all joints of the body and one of the most complex.
To accommodate such forces and to prevent too much wear and tear, the cartilage between the mandible and skull normally provides a smooth surface, over which the joint can freely slide with minimal friction.

However, most people that suffer from TMJ pain is a result of displacement of the cartilage disc that causes pressure and stretching of the ociated sensory nerves.
If you habitually clench, grit, or grind your teeth, you increase the wear on the cartilage lining of the joint.
Chewing gum, Stress, teeth that do not fit together properly (improper bite), malpositioned jaws, and arthritis, can also lead to TMJ pain.
Some symptoms are:
* Ear pain
* Sore jaw muscles
* Temple and cheek pain
* Jaw popping and clicking
* Locking of the Jaw
* Difficulty in opening the mouth fully
* Frequent head and neck aches
Because TMJ symptoms often develop in the head and neck, doctors will suggest a more supportive pillow. The Better Sleep Pillow is a great remedy to TMJ. The Better Sleep Pillow’s memory foam construction is designed to properly support the spine and reduce TMJ pain.

Aching muscles and sore jaw - what to do?

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 by admin

I know a few people at the moment who seem to have the same thing: flu like symptoms that include achy muscles and a mild fever (which thankfully dissipates), but also a sore jaw and headache.

Is there any treatment that anyone can recommend? I'm slightly perplexed by the sore jaw, as I've never personally experienced this whilst having the flu.

Many thanks in advance.

A sore jaw is a symptom of severely inflamed sinuses. Especially the upper jaw. It can even lead to what feels like toothache. Nothing to worry about, just push those hot fluids and it will dissipate very soon.
Try Vick's Vapor Rub at night and it will help open your sinuses naturally and help you get better rest.
Hope you feel better soon.

A few days ago my jaw locked (TMJ symptoms), and I can't open my mouth properly and I'm in a lot of pain.

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 by admin

I went to an oral surgeon who is sending me for an x-ray. It seems that what he has in mind may empty my bank account. Are there any home remedies that can loosen my jaw? Also, will it get worse if left untreated- or can it possibly get better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Your jaw is locked because the muscle is in spasm- and the body has locked it down to prevent it being further irritated. Try applying heat to the jawline and sipping the warmest fluids you can. When you get some in the mouth, turn your head so it will pool in the cheek pocket- to warm matters from the inside as well. That should let things relax enough to let you take as much as 800 mg of Ibuprofen- which has antiinflammatory/spasmodic properties that can give you some relief. A permanent fix depends on what it triggering the TMJ to begin with, or at least eliminating something like impacted molars, or even a misaligned bite. The simplest fix is for those who grind their teeth at night, and overstress the jaw muscles. That's just a bite guard, which is made to fit you personally by any dentist. It won't require an oral surgeon. If the heat and ibuprofen(motrin) won't give you enough relief, a regular dentist may be able to inject a local anestheic into the spot to give you temporary relief and let you open the mouth better. It's not a good idea to just leave it go- as the jaw in a clamped position will give you headaches and the spasms can actually crack molars or other teeth. So go see a regular dentist, at least to find out what lies behind the problem, and possibly figure out what the real problem is. Jaw clamping is just a symptom- not the disease.

Has anyone worn a splint to help with TMJ symptoms?

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 by admin

I just saw my dentist today and she recommended that I wear a splint to help with my bite and TMJ. How does it help?

I had TMJ in my Jaw about three months ago.
The dentists never gave me anything for it.
The dentist said it would go away naturally and it did.
I doubt there is a reason for any kind of medicine unless it is hurting uncontrollably.
I thought it kind of felt cool, it felt something like a numbness.
At first I didn't understand what it was, I thought i had lock jaw.:)
It shouldn't be that big of deal unless the pain is severe.
Hope you feel better.
P.s
Make your friends and family fell sorry for you. It makes it go by so much easier.

How do I get rid of my TMJ pain?

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 by admin

I woke up this morning with terribly TMJ pain. I normally have a little bit but never this much. I have a party to be at today at 3 and would really appreciate any advice on how to get rid of this pain. Thank you!
I have a splint that I sleep with at night. I've never been prescribed any meds so maybe I should call tomorrow and ask? I've had TMJ for about 6 months and I've never had this much pain from it

TMJ is a very common misdiagnosed condition. The most common cause of TMJ is that your head and neck are not aligned properly. As a result, your head is sitting slightly crooked. So the jaw (which wants to be level) will tighten one side and loosen the other. This leads to extreme jaw pain.

Doctors will usually refer to a dentist and they will give a mouth guard or recommend having your teeth ground down. However, a chiropractor can help to realign your head and neck. This will tell the jaw to correct itself. Then you will have relief from the pain.

Here is a way to check. On both sides of your head there are is a bump (called mastoid processes). If you stand in front of a mirror and close your eyes and then put one thumb from each hand just underneath those bumps and then open your eyes. If your thumbs are not even then this is going on.

I really wish you the best

Does anyone know any good exercises for relieving TMJ pain?

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 by admin

I've been having TMJ pain for about 3-4 weeks along with headaches & neck pain. Does anyone know any good exercises for relieving the pain and tension?? Also, does anyone know what kind of medical doctors treat TMJ? My insurance won't cover treatment from a dentist, only a medical doctor. Thanks! Cheryl

bummer!–my wife had a prescription for the pain. it was only a problem occasionally. she saw an oral surgeon and an orthodontists. they did some braces, then the surgery to correct her jaw. i didn't know your head could swell that much. she looked like she went 5 rounds with mike tyson. anyways, she doesn't get the neck pain or the headaches anymore, and she doesn't grind her teeth when she sleeps anymore. i think those things are a whole chain of events if you know what i mean.; onw leads to the other.
